The positioning and identity of Sea Island & Ferry have been a topic in discussion since its formation in 2016. While calling itself a neo-chamber ensemble, the group is also perceived to be producing works in the likes of film music. Whether telling stories about migration, sexual minorities, climate change, or the lives of artists, people and objects in their home base of Hong Kong play a major part in inspiring the group’s music.

As a performing team, Sea Island & Ferry has been active both locally in Hong Kong and overseas — appearing at eccentric local venues, and also charting its course in Macau, Taiwan and Okinawa, Japan. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the group also launched a number of online performances.

Sea Island & Ferry has also built a firm foundation in creating and recording music projects. Beginning with Crossings in 2018, the group has maintained a pace of releasing an album every two years. After Telescope, released in 2020 and enthusiastically received by local critics, the group presents their third recording project in 2022. Released digitally in two tranches, the project As if brings to its audience a dual collection of works with contrasting theses and moods, and garnered the ensemble with an award from the Hong Kong Music Critics Choice, as Band/Group of the Year 2022.

The group also seeks to expand possibilities in terms of collaborating with other artists in different media. When releasing its first album in 2018, Sea Island & Ferry collaborated with director 6 @ RubberBand on a series of short films and presented their first multimedia concert “Crossings - Music X Films”. More recently in 2022, the group was invited to create music for an exhibition titled In-Between at the Hong Kong Museum of Art, mashing up with animations, installations and other types of artwork, and culminating in the EP “As if - I. In-Between”. Members of the group also worked on the original score for the documentary “To Be Continued”, which premiered at the Hong Kong International Film Festival 2023.
